Union Jail Raid and Massacre Twilight Vigil

  • 220 West Main Street Union, SC 29379 United States (map)

2021 marks 150 years since at least 11 Black men were lynched by the Ku Klux Klan in January and February of 1871 during the Union Jail Raid and Massacre. Join the Union County Community Remembrance Project to honor their lives with a Twilight Vigil.

UCCRP Coalition members will represent each life lost via drive-in procession down Main St, past the jail, and into the L.W. Long Building parking lot in their vehicles to maintain social distancing. Mayor Harold Thompson will speak at the Vigil and a preview of the approved text of the Historical Marker to be placed at the jail in June will be revealed.

Community members are invited to participate in the Twilight Vigil by tuning in to the livestream via our Facebook group or YouTube channel. Request to join our Facebook group here.
